Wegovy (semaglutide)
Wegovy is an injection that contains the active ingredient semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1) receptor agonist.
How does it work?
Wegovy works in the same way as GLP-1 in your body, which is a hormone that is produced in our intestines after we eat. This hormone sends signals to your brain that make you feel full and satisfied after eating. It also stimulates the release of insulin, a hormone that lowers blood sugar.
How to take it?
Wegovy is injected under the skin once a week. It comes in pre-filled doses, starting at 0.25 mg. You will gradually increase your dose over the first 17 weeks of treatment to help your body adjust to the medication. Once you reach the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg, you will stay on it until the end of your treatment.
How effective is it?
Wegovy can help people lose up to 15% of their weight on a maintenance dose after 68 weeks.
Semaglutide was originally used to treat type 2 diabetes, under the name Ozempic, but doctors have found that it is also effective for weight loss. Wegovy Dosage Plan:
Weeks 1-4: 0.25 mg once a week
Weeks 5-8: 0.5 mg once a week
Weeks 9-12: 1 mg once a week
Weeks 13-16: 1.7 mg once a week
Weeks 17 and beyond: 2.4 mg once a week
You should never increase your dose once you reach the maximum dose of 2.4 mg per week.
